Founded in 1913, the Galerie Stern was a landmark on the Königsallee until it was forced to close in 1937 due to Nazi persecution. The Jewish owner, Dr. Max Stern (1904-1987), fled Germany and settled in Canada. Upon his death, he left his assets to three university beneficiaries in Canada and Israel – Concordia University, McGill University and Hebrew University, Jerusalem.
Since 2002, mandated by these university beneficiaries, the Max Stern Art Restitution Project team has commited itself to recovering more than four hundred works lost to Dr. Stern. The Krafft painting is the thirteenth to be returned to the universities. It will be loaned to the Düsseldorf City Museum.
A major exhibition on the Galerie Stern and the art restitution project will open at the museum in 2018 and travel internationally.
