Mit Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs 1914 befanden sich die australischen, neuseeländischen und kanadischen Dominions als Bestandteile des British Empire automatisch im Kriegszustand. In der Folge sollten die Erfahrungen des „Großen Krieges“ wichtige Meilensteine für diese drei Nationen auf dem Weg in die Unabhängigkeit werden. Der Vortragsabend versammelt drei namhafte Historiker aus Übersee um Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede im Prozess des Nation Building nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zu diskutieren. Noch 100 Jahre später prägen die unterschiedlichen Erfahrungen des Ersten Weltkriegs das Selbstverständnis und die Identität dieser drei großen Nationen.

With the start of World War I in 1914, as constituent parts of the British Empire the Australian, New Zealand and Canadian Dominions were themselves automatically at war. In the years to come, the experience of the „Great War“ would be an important milestone for all three countries on the road to full independence. The evening lecture brings together three renowned historians from overseas to discuss similarities and differences in the process of nation-building following the First World War. 100 years later, the different experiences of World War I continue to shape the self-image and identity of these three great nations.

Avec le début de la Première Guerre mondiale en 1914 , l’Australie, la Nouvelle-Zélande et le Dominion du Canada étaient automatiquement en guerre et l’expérience de cette «Grande Guerre» fût une étape importante pour l’indépendance de ces trois pays. La conférence rassemblera trois historiens de réputation internationale afin de discuter des similitudes et des différences dans le processus de construction de ces trois nations après la Première Guerre mondiale. 100 ans plus tard, les différentes expériences de la Première Guerre mondiale influencent toujours l’image de soi et l’identité de ces trois grandes nations.
