15 wine producers from two Canadian provinces will exhibit at international trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany

Ontario, CANADA (Feb. 20, 2015) – Canadian wineries from Ontario and British Columbia have joined together to exhibit under the banner of ‘Wines of Canada’ at ProWein 2015. Over three days, 15 wineries from Canada’s two primary wine growing regions will exhibit together within this national booth in Düsseldorf, Germany, for this important international wine trade exhibition.

The Canadian pavilion will showcase red and white wines along with Icewine and sparkling wine to highlight the diversity and quality of Canadian wine. Trade and media are invited to meet winemakers and taste exciting examples of cool climate wines including Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir and more in Hall 9, Stand D 48.

„Our industry is excited to be back for ProWein 2015 where our wines will be shown alongside the best from the world. This year, Wine Country Ontario is excited to be sponsoring two ‘Discover the Wines of Canada’ sessions at the ProWein Forum, each led by an internationally respected wine writer. Ian D’Agata and Jamie Goode will each lead a different seminar tasting and both are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about our wine regions.“, said Magdalena Kaiser, Director of PR for Wine Country Ontario.

„In the last couple of years I have visited Canada three times and tasted a lot of wines. I’ve been so surprised by just how many interesting Canadian wines there now are, and I’ve had a lot of fun exploring the Okanagan, Niagara and Prince Edward County, all of which have some seriously good producers. So it’s going to be exciting to present some of these wines to people who haven’t experienced them before.“, said Jamie Goode, Ph.D., London-based wine writer, wine columnist, The Sunday Express.

„I think Ontario wines are world class, especially the cool climate varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. But the region makes unbelievably great Cabernet Franc and even Gamay. It really is a viticulturally blessed corner of the wine world and I truly believe Ontario winemakers are sitting on a gold mine and am happy and honoured every time I can talk and describe their wines, especially since I was there when it all started, way back when Inniskillin made its first ever Icewine of which I am without any doubt one of the first of few wine writers to have tried it.“, said Ian D’Agata, lead wine writer on Italy for Decanter, covering Canada, Italy and Alsace for Vinous and Scientific Director of Vinitaly International.

Wine Country Ontario, is leading the ProWein 2015 ‘Wines of Canada’ pavilion that was initiated at ProWein 2014 by the Ontario Food Exports, of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food and is appreciative of their ongoing support for this international initiative.

„A primary goal of Ontario Food Exports is to help companies maximize their export opportunities. We are very excited about the Canadian wine pavilion at ProWein and we are confident it will provide a great environment for Canadian wine producers to maximize their opportunities for international exposure and global sales during the three days of this important international wine show,“ said Jennifer Hannam, Ontario Food Exports.

Canada’s wine growing regions are situated within the recognized growing zones of 30 and 50 degrees latitude north, which is shared by many other cool climate wine regions in Europe. Our primary wine-growing regions are the Niagara Peninsula in southern Ontario and the Okanagan Valley in southern British Columbia, along with other regions in each of these provinces and smaller producing areas found in Quebec and Nova Scotia. Although small in scale by world standard, wine is a growing business in Canada, with wineries sprouting up wherever soil and climate permit the growing of productive vines. The Similkameen Valley, adjacent to the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, and Lake Erie North Shore and Prince Edward County in Ontario, are producing excellent wines, with the industry having undergone a renaissance over the past few decades. All together, Canada’s wine growing regions are comprised of 30,000 acres (12,150 Hectares) and 548 wineries.
